First Look: Nomos Metro Adds Ice-Blue Dials and Upgraded Movements
Two Metro models feature striking urban dial colors, while the iconic Date Power Reserve model is equipped with a new movement.
German product designer Mark Braun created the Metro watch series in 2014. Drawing inspiration from subway maps and graphics, Braun infused the brand's classic Bauhaus design language with just the right touch of color and urban style. The original Metro Date Power Reserve marked a milestone in the brand's history as the first model to feature the Nomos Swing System. This proprietary escapement replaced outsourced components, cementing Nomos's status as a formidable in-house movement manufacturer. Now, Nomos is adding new colors to this urban-inspired collection with two Metro models featuring ice-blue dials: the Metro Neomatik 41 Update, which displays the entire month at a glance, and the iconic Metro Date Power Reserve, now powered by the brand's latest generation of manual-winding movements.
The Updated Metro Date Power Reserve
The dial designed by Braun for the original Metro Date Power Reserve (Ref. 1101) features an asymmetrical layout, with the power reserve indicator positioned between 12 and 1 o'clock and the Nomos logo at 9 o'clock. Visually striking elements inspired by subway maps are accented with color, with specific hues varying by model. The Metro Date Power Reserve features a compact 37mm polished stainless steel case—measuring just 7.8mm thick—complemented by wire lugs and a slender bezel. It is powered by the Nomos manual-winding DUW 4401 movement; this caliber marked the debut of the brand's signature Swing System escapement and represents an evolution of the Alpha movement. The proprietary "Swing System" escapement and regulating components—comprising the balance wheel, balance spring, escape wheel, and pallet fork—are manufactured in-house at the brand’s Glashütte facility. This allows Nomos to control the most critical elements governing timekeeping precision and reliability, placing the company among the select few manufacturers capable of mass-producing their own escapements.
The new ice-blue dial faithfully retains the layout of the original model: the power reserve indicator and brand logo remain off-center, while the small seconds sub-dial and date display occupy the traditional 6 o'clock position. Integrated into the main dial, the tri-colored power reserve indicator uses cyan to denote a full charge, light blue for a medium charge, and white for a low charge. The metallic ice-blue dial features white minute dots interspersed between gray Arabic numerals along the outer rim, cyan dot hour markers, and a light blue small seconds hand; the date display at 6 o'clock presents gray numerals against a white background. The slender, tapered hour and minute hands are rhodium-plated.
Beyond its exquisite aesthetics, the new Metro Date Power Reserve houses the brand-new DUW 4701 manual-winding caliber. This slim, next-generation movement—based on the DUW 4601 (which debuted in the Tangente 2date)—features a quick-set date function and a 52-hour power reserve. Measuring 32.1 mm by 2.8 mm, the DUW 4701 has been slightly downsized and specifically engineered to drive the watch's asymmetrical display. Through the case back's window, the movement's intricate mechanics are fully visible: a sunburst pattern radiates from the regulating mechanism across the three-quarter plate, complemented by perlage finishing, gold engravings, heat-blued screws, and an open-worked balance bridge that reveals the bright blue Swing System balance spring. Incidentally, there is also a version with a silvery-white dial; it resembles the first-generation Metro but has been upgraded with the DUW 4701 movement.

METRO NEOMATIK 41 UPDATE
Launched in 2021, the Nomos Metro Neomatik 41 Update is the largest and most dynamic-looking model in the Metro series; it features the brand's patented ring date display, which frames the date between two markers. This complication first appeared on the Tangente model in 2018, powered by the DUW 6101 movement. While retaining the aesthetic of a subway map, the cutout section of the ring date display resembles a circular timetable—or even a railway track—where different stations (dates) are marked by an orange indicator.
The new ice-blue model adopts a cleaner color scheme: the ring date display is framed by two teal markers, followed by a light blue minute track and gray Arabic numerals. The hour markers are white, with larger markers at the 12, 3, and 9 o'clock positions. The recessed small seconds sub-dial, featuring a snailed finish, is adorned with blue markers and light blue hands. The slender hour and minute hands are rhodium-plated.
The watch features a 40 mm x 9.1 mm stainless steel case with wire-style lugs and a slim bezel, accentuating the expansive feel of the ice-blue dial. Like previous versions, it is powered by the in-house DUW 6101 automatic movement (Neomatik); measuring just 3.6 mm thick, it offers a date display, a stop-seconds function, and a 50-hour power reserve. Decorative elements include the signature Glashütte three-quarter plate with Glashütte ribbing, perlage, gold-filled engravings, and blued screws.
